Bedford HA Walls - Batman
This time an Ice Cream vehicle with the Batman conversion. A
very bulky conversion as you can see. Walls turned to ice cream production
as a consequence of the phobia people had over eating pork during the summer
in the early part of the 20th century. At the time home refrigeration was
not widespread and pork didnt keep well during the hot weather. As
a result Walls were laying off staff with a large drop in sales -
hence the switch to ice-cream.

Tonibell Pink
The very popular Tonibell livery on the Bedford CA in pink. Tonibell was
started in 1937 by Italian-born Toni Pignatelli and his Scottish wife. Known
as Tonis, it consisted of a small ice-cream manufacturing plant in a shop
in the High Street of Middlesex. Their first mobile vehicle was purchased
in 1951 - a tricycle fitted with a holdover box to carry ice-cream. A year
later a small van was converted into a mobile ice-cream vehicle complete
with chimes.
Business expanded and the name was changed to Tonibell and over the years
the company changed hands many times and at its peak there were over 500
vans and 15 parlours.

Luchini's Bedford CA
Luchinis were established in Market Place, Cockermouth in 1901. 16
year old Luigi Luchini leased premises from which he manufactured and sold
ice cream and confectionery. He had arrived in the country from Italy four
years earlier and was employed initially washing lemonade bottles, before
moving on to Tognarellis for a short period.
His own new business prospered, interrupted only during the 1914-1918 war
when he served with the Border Regiment, during which time his wife ran
the business. He had eight children and as they grew older they played an
increasing part in the prosperity of the firm. Luigi and his family started
delivering ices to the surrounding district, firstly by horse drawn vehicles
and later by motor. A further outlet was opened and on Luigis retirement,
Frank a son took over the running of the business. He met his death whilst
serving in North Africa in 1942 and another son Ralph after demobbing from
the Royal engineers in 1947, took over the business with his brother Denis
and sister Evelyn. A shop was then opened in Keswick.

Home & Colonial Gown Van
Sir Julius Drewe was a self-made millionaire whose chain of Home and Colonial
Stores enabled him to retire in 1899 at the age of 33. (only a few more
years to go for Taff!) He had discovered that a Norman baron named Drogo
de Teigne was his ancestor and was determined to build a castle on the acres
that had once belonged to him. He chose a site near Drewsteignton, Devon,
900 foot above the Teign gorge the foundation stone was laid on Sir Julius'
55th birthday in 1911. His stores continued to prosper and our gown van
is shown carrying advertising, boasting over 100 stores in the 1960s.

HA013 - Post Office Buzby
Post Office Telephones, as they were before privatisation, used to advertise
using Buzby - a big fat yellow cartoon bird who would encourage us to 'Make
someone happy with a phone call'. His voice was provided by the great Bernard
Cribbins - also of 'Wombles' fame. He was quite a hit with kids, but they
didn't pay the phone bills so eventually he got replaced. Gone but not forgotten!
